The Boys from Fengkuei established Hou’s style. The humanities appear in the single camera and the sorrow reflects in the medium long shots are realistically portrayed just as the Taiwan New Wave Cinema. A group of laddish adolescents moves from Penghu to Kaohsiung for a better life and confront the urban-rural differences to catch up with a new age. Growing up, the main character A-ching is no longer a teen standing by the sea in his village but a man being swamped by the crowds in the city. Hou narrates youth in a light-hearted and humorous way that puts a smile on your face. Edward Yang’s selection of mellifluous classical violin concerto as background music juxtaposes the restlessness of the youth and the city-country alienation.
