The film adapts Huang Chunming’s novel of the same title. Bai Mei, who was sold by her stepparents to be a prostitute, gets a glimpse of hope from her son. Wang beautifully elaborates on the limited imageries from the novel, such as window security bars resembling life behind bars and the monologue with mirror. The supporting characters and other details are weaved in a way that they reinforce the subjectivity of the female lead without compromising its realistic style. Lu Hsiao-fen's role as Bai Mei well-deservedly won the best leading actress of the Golden Horse Awards for her both coquettish and refined acting.
